Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)
It is an antioxidant widely used in cosmetics and personal care products to protect delicate ingredients from oxidation, especially oils, fats, and fragrances. It is highly effective at low concentrations, making it an economical and efficient option for improving the stability of formulations.
BHT works through a cosmetic mechanism that reduces oxidation within the product, helping to maintain the formula's quality, color, scent, and performance over time. It is not an active ingredient on the skin itself, but rather a stabilizing agent for the final product, exhibiting good thermal stability and broad compatibility with both oil-based and emulsifying systems.
Benefits
- It helps protect oils and fats from oxidation.
- It contributes to extending the product's lifespan.
- It maintains color and fragrance stability.
- Effective at very low concentrations
- Compatible with most oils, perfumes, and fatty substances
- Suitable for various cosmetic installation systems
How to use
- Manufacturing stage: Oil phase
- Temperature: Thermally stable and can be added during heating of the oil phase (up to 70°C)
- pH range: Not to be applied directly (oil-based ingredient)
- Important structural notes:
- It must be completely dissolved in the oil before being combined with the other ingredients.
- It is often used with other antioxidants such as Tocopherol (Vitamin E) to enhance protection.
- Do not use in concentrations higher than recommended.
Recommended ratios
- In general cosmetic formulations: 0.01% – 0.1%
- In oils and perfumes: 0.02% – 0.05%
- The maximum recommended amount for cosmetic use: as per approved regulations, and usually does not exceed 0.1%
Melting
- Water: Insoluble
- Glycolates: Insoluble
- Oils: Soluble
- Compositional notes: Add directly to the oil phase to ensure uniform distribution and effective protection against oxidation.
Applications
- Skin care creams and lotions
- Care oils and serums
- Perfumes and body sprays
- Hair care products
- Products containing vegetable oils or perfumes that are sensitive to oxidation
Storage
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Keep away from direct light and high heat.
- Ideal storage temperature: below 25°C
- It seals tightly to prevent exposure to air.
- Proper storage maintains its effectiveness and stability.
Organizational note:
BHT is intended for cosmetic use only, and is used within the limits permitted by the cosmetic regulations of the European Union and approved regulatory bodies.
