Glyceryl monostearate
It is a fatty cosmetic ingredient widely used as an emulsifier and texture enhancer in skin and hair care products. It is an ester produced by the reaction of glycerin with stearic acid and is a common ingredient in oil-in-water (O/W) emulsifying systems.
Glyceryl monostearate is used cosmetically to support the stability of emulsions and improve formulation structure, contributing to a smooth, creamy, and balanced texture. It is gentle and highly compatible with the skin, and is often used as a co-emulsifier alongside other emulsifiers to enhance performance and stability.
Benefits
- It helps emulsify oils within water-based formulations.
- It contributes to improving the stability of emulsions.
- It gives a smooth, creamy, and even texture.
- It improves sensory perception and ease of movement.
- Suitable for all skin types
- Compatible with most vegetable oils and fatty ingredients
How to use
- Manufacturing stage: Oil phase
- Temperature: It usually melts at temperatures between 60–75°C
- Recommended pH range: 4.0 to 8.0
- Important structural notes:
- It must be completely dissolved before emulsification to ensure a homogeneous formulation.
- It is often used with supporting emulsifiers such as Cetearyl Alcohol or Glyceryl Stearate SE
- It contributes to increasing the viscosity of the product and improving its final structure.
Recommended ratios
- As an emulsifying or thickening agent: 1% – 5%
- In creams and lotions: 2% – 4%
- In rich formulations: up to 6% depending on the desired consistency
- Maximum recommended amount for cosmetic use: depends on the complete emulsification system.
Melting
- Water: Insoluble
- Glycolates: Insoluble
- Oils: Soluble when heated
- Compositional notes: It dissolves in the hot oil phase and contributes to the formation of a stable creamy texture.
Applications
- Skin care creams and lotions
- Face and body moisturizing products
- Dry skin care products
- Hair care products
- Hand and foot creams
- Daily care products
Storage
- Store in a cool, dry place.
- Keep away from moisture and high temperatures.
- Ideal storage temperature: below 25°C
- The package is tightly sealed to prevent clumping.
- It is preferable to store in airtight containers to maintain quality.
Organizational note:
